Innovator in cancer, diabetes treatment discussing his research in Pensacola

A nationally renowned bio-engineer will be in Pensacola this week discussing revolutionary cancer and diabetes treatments.

Dr. Zhen Gu is a professor of bio-engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles, and the co-founder of five startup companies. He was recognized as an MIT Technology Review "Global Top Innovator" and recipient of the Pathway Award of the American Diabetes Association.

Gu led a team of engineers that developed a "smart insulin patch" that monitors the user's blood sugar levels and delivers appropriate doses of medicine as needed. Gu has also worked to develop other nano-scale treatments, such as "nanocapsules" which can be absorbed into cancer cells and then deliver anti-cancer drugs to the areas where they will be most effective.

He has published more than 160 research papers and applied for over 50 patents. In addition, he is a co-founder of five startup companies

Gu will be discussing his work and research at a trio of events over the next three days.

On Thursday evening, the University of West Florida Center for Entrepreneurship is hosting Gu for "Curiosity, Perseverance and Biomedical Entrepreneurship," a free, open-to-the-public event where Gu will discuss his personal success story and the businesses and innovations he has helped create.

That event will begin with a reception at 5 p.m., followed by the presentation at 5:30 p.m. The event will be held on UWF's campus at 11000 University Parkway, Building 234, in the second-floor multipurpose room. Parking is available in Lot E on Campus Drive. Also on Thursday afternoon, Gu will appear at the EntreCon Breakout Session "From Research to Market: How Universities Advance Entrepreneurship." EntreCon registration information is also available at entreconpensacola.com and eventbrite.com.
